Binedell SA's best performer in Monaco

The young and talented South African swimming team showcased their incredible passion for the sport during the final leg of the 39th annual Mare Nostrum Series at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco on Saturday.

It was bronze for Martin Binedell in the 100m backstroke, clocking 56.83 behind Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov in 56.80 and Austria’s Bernhard Reistshammer in 56.62, while Chase Rayment concluded the B Finals in fourth place in 59.56.

Binedell also managed a fourth place finish in the 50m backstroke in 26.74, ahead of Rayment in seveth place with a time of 28.12.

Rebecca Meder just missed out on a medal in the 400m individual medley when she finished fourth in 4:49.69 and later on concluded the 200m freestyle in fifth place with a time of 2:04.32, while in the freestyle B Finals, Lindsay Mcleod finished fifth in 2:08.12.

Megan Tully was eighth in the 200m backstroke in 2:21.54.

In the B Finals of the 200m breaststroke, Alaric Basson came in first with a time of 2:16.56, and concluded the evening with a fourth place in the B Finals of the 50m breaststroke in 28.50.

In the 100m butterfly B Finals, Khwezi Duma swam to a sixth position in 1:04.95 and finished the 50m butterfly B Finals in eigth place in 29.45, behind Olivia Nel in 29.12 and Kerryn Herbst in 29.23.

Nel and Herbst also took to the water in the 50m backstroke B Final and finished sixth and seventh in 30.06 and 30.87, respectively, while Nel participated in the B Finals of the 50m freestyle and touched the wall in eighth place in 27.68 behind Aimee Canny in fifth place in 26.77.

The Mare Nostrum Series concludes on Sunday, after which the South African swimming team will move to Italy for the Treviso Swim Cup on 22nd and 23rd June.
