Another Diamond League win for Manyonga

Long jumper Luvo Manyonga was the star performer on Thursday evening, again spearheading the South African charge with a fine performance at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome, Italy.

Launching a leap of 8.58m in the second round, the world outdoor champion clinched victory five centimetres ahead of world indoor champion Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba (8.53m).

Manyonga stretched his lead in the series standings in his specialist discipline, taking his second Diamond League win of the season.

Ruswahl Samaai took third position with a best effort of 8.34m, in a spectacular contest which saw seven men clear the eight-metre barrier.

Commonwealth Games and national record holder Akani Simbine was fifth in the 100m men's sprint in 10.13 seconds, finishing 0.20 off the pace of American winner Ronnie Baker.

“Congratulations to our athletes for giving their best against quality fields,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of Athletics South Africa. “We also express a special compliment to Manyonga who won his event.”

The fifth leg of the IAAF Diamond League series will be held in Oslo, Norway, on Thursday, 7 June.
