Charlo defends against former champion

Jermell Charlo makes the third defence of his WBC junior-middleweight belt when he meets former champion Austin Trout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Charlo (30-0; 15) won the vacant WBC belt with a stoppage victory over John Jackson in May 2016, and has made successful defences against Charles Hatley (ko 6) and Eric Lubin (ko 1).

Trout, 32, with a record of 31-4; 17, is an experienced campaigner and a former WBC junior-middleweight champion.

He has been in with champions like Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo’’ Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, Jermall Charlo and Jarrett Hurd.

He won the WBC junior-middleweight belt with a unanimous decision over Rigoberto Alvarez in 2011, and made four successful defences.

However, he is coming off two losses in his last three fights.

The younger Charlo goes into the fight as the favourite and there are even predictions that he will win inside the distance.

The other major organisation champions are WBA/IBF, Jarrett Hurd (US) and WBO, Jaime Munguia (Mexico).

On the same card, Leo Santa Cruz (34-1-1; 19), in his second reign as featherweight champion, defends his WBA belt against Abner Mares (31-2-1) in a rematch.

Santa Cruz lost his belt to Carl Frampton and regained the belt in a rematch. He beat Mares decisively in 2015.

This could be a good fight with the result unlikely to change, as Santa Cruz will probably win again.
