Clash of unbeaten fighters

In a clash of unbeaten fighters, Errol Spence Jr from the United States defends his IBF welterweight belt for the second time when he meets Mexico’s Carlos Ocampo at the Ford Centre at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Spence (23-0; 20), who fights from the southpaw stance, won the IBF belt in May 2017 when he stopped Kell Brook in the 11th round, and then in January this year made a successful defence against Lamont Peterson with a seventh-round stoppage.

This might look like a competitive match-up on paper, but Ocampo (22-0; 13), who is listed at No 3 by the IBF, will be having his first crack at a world title and has not been tested against any world class opposition.

All his fights have been in Mexico against journeyman fighters, and one must question his high ranking.

However, Ocampo, 22, has a useful jab and uses his height and reach to his advantage.

Spence, who has won his last ten fights inside the distance, is a skilful fighter with plenty of power in his southpaw left hand, with a knockout ratio of 87 percent.

The odds are that he will once again win inside the distance.

The other major organisation champions are WBA, Keith Thurman (US) and WBO, Terrence Crawford (US). The WBC belt is vacant.

On the same card, Daniel Roman (24-2-1; 9) from Los Angeles, California, defends his WBA junior-featherweight belt against Mexico’s Moises Flores (25-0; 17).

In his last two fights Roman, 28, has travelled to Japan to score upset wins over Shun Kubo (tko 9) to win the WBA belt, and Ryo Matsumoto (pts 12) in his first defence.

Flores goes in to the fight as the overwhelming favourite.

The other major organisation champions are WBC, Rey Vargas (Mexico), IBF, Ryosuke Iwasa (Japan) and WBO Isaac Dogboe (Ghana).
