Acosta wins in last round

Angel Acosta from Puerto Rico retained the WBO junior-flyweight belt when he stopped mandatory challenger Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua in the twelfth round at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Acosta 18-1; 18 was making the first defence of the belt that he won in December last year when he stopped Mexico’s Juan Alejo in a clash for the vacant belt.

Buitrago 30-4-1; 17 put up a stern resistance throughout and through rounds seven to ten picked up the pace as he stood toe-to-toe with the champion. However, in the last round, Acosta hurt Buitrago with a combination of punches before referee Luis Pabon stepped in to wave the fight off at 1 minute 43 seconds into the round.

WBA junior-featherweight champion Daniel Roman 24-2-1; 9 retained his WBA junior-featherweight belt with a 12 round unanimous points decision over Moises Flores 25-1; 17 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas on Saturday night. Flores came in overweight at the weigh-in so he could not claim the title if he won.

The scores were 120-108, 118-110 and 116-112. Flores put up a spirited performance against the champion but it was not enough as Roman was in control throughout.
