Berchalt defends WBC belt against Barros

Miguel Berchalt of Mexico defends his WBC junior-lightweight belt against Jonathan Victor Barros from Argentina on Saturday at the Poliórum Zamná in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

The 26-year-old Berchalt, who has a record of 33-1; 29, is coming off an impressive third-round stoppage win over Maxwell Awuku (44-3-1) from Ghana in February this year, and will be making the third defence of his belt.

Berchalt suffered his only loss in March 2014 when Luis Eduardo Florez stopped him in the first round.

The champion has power in his right hand with a knockout ratio of 85 percent, and has won 18 of his last 19 fights inside the distance.

He is a come-forward fighter and throws deadly combinations. In some quarters he is rated as the best junior-lightweight in the world.

The 34-year-old Barros, with a record of 41-5-1 (22), has been fighting as a professional since March 2004 and is coming off a points-loss against Lee Selby in his last fight on 15 July, 2017 when challenging for the IBF featherweight belt.

His other losses have come against Yuriokis Gamboa (pts), Celestino Caballero (pts), Juan Carlos Salgado (pts) and Mikey Garcia (tko 8).

Barros is a hard puncher and has a good chin, but the odds are that he will not have enough to dethrone the champion.

The other main organisation champions are WBA, Gervonta Davis (USA). The IBF and WBO belts are vacant.
