Ramirez makes first defence

Jose Carlos Ramirez from California makes the first defence of his WBC junior-welterweight belt when he meets Danny O’Connor of Framington, USA at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Ramirez 22-0; 16 won the vacant belt when he outpointed Amir Imam (21-1) over 12 rounds on March 17 this year.

Ramirez a 2012 US Olympian made his pro debut in December 2012 and is a pressure fighter who likes to work the body. He has power in his right hand with a 73% knockout ratio.

In his winning fight against Imam he outworked his opponent with scores of 120-108, 117-111 and a surprising close 115-113 on the third card.

He has not been in with any top rated fighter but should have enough to beat the limited O’Connor.

The 33-year-old O’Connor 30-3; 11 who fights from the southpaw stance is listed at number thirteen by the WBC and has been fighting as a pro for ten years.

He was a good amateur but has not really made it as a pro. Two of his losses were on points and his third loss came on a first round stoppage against Gabriel Bracero in October 2015. The fight was stopped by referee Arthur Mercante Jr at 41 seconds into the round.

O’Connor is a complete underdog and many consider this a mismatch with some odds quoted at 42-to- 1.

The other main organisation junior-welterweight champions are WBA, Kiryl Relikh (Belarus) and WBO, Maurice Hooker (USA). The IBF belt is vacant.
