WBA junior-lightweight champion Machado defends belt for third time

WBA secondary junior-lightweight champion Alberto Machado of Puerto Rico defends his belt for the third time when he faces Andrew Cancio of Blythe, California at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old southpaw, who has a record of 21-0; 17, won the vacant belt in October, 2017 with an eighth-round knockout win over Jezzrel Corrales (22-1) and has made successful defences against Rafael Mensah (pts 12) and Yuandale Evans (ko 1).

Cancio, 30, who is listed at No. 8 by the WBA, has a record of 19-4-2; 14. He possesses fair power with a knockout ratio of 56 percent, but with height and reach advantages the champion should retain his belt.

On the same card, Rey Vargas (32-0; 22) of Mexico makes the fourth defence of his WBC junior-featherweight belt against No. 3 ranked Franklin Mazanilla (18-4; 17) from Venezuela.

The 28-year-old Vargas won the vacant belt on 25 February, 2017 with a majority points decision over Gavin McDonnell and has made successful defences against Ronny Rios (28-1), Oscar Negrete (17-0) and Azat Hovhannisyan (14-20), all on points decisions.

Both fighters are big punchers but the talented Vargas is tipped to win on a hard-earned 12-round point’s decision.
