Ramirez retains junior-welter belt on controversial decision

WBC junior-welterweight champion Jose Carlos Ramirez retained his belt on a closely-fought 12-round controversial majority points decision against Jose Zepeda at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California on Sunday night.

The scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 114-114.

Many at ringside were of the opinion that Ramirez did not do enough to take the decision as, according to the fight stats, Ramirez landed 149 of 601 shots with a percentage of 24 whereas Zepeda connected with 200 of 621 shots for a percentage of 32.

Through the first six rounds the 26-year-old Ramirez was out-boxed, but did come on strong in the later rounds when the challenger began to tire.

Ramirez battled with the slick boxing skills of Zepeda, who was clearly the better fighter and it appeared as if the judges gave rounds to the champion that he had probably lost.

It was Zepeda who landed the cleaner punches throughout, even though Ramirez finished the stronger of the two.

This was Zepeda’s second crack at a world title. In July 2015 in Manchester, England he lost to Terry Flanagan on a second-round stoppage after dislocating his left shoulder.

Ramirez improved his record to 24-0; 16 and Zepeda’s record dropped to 30-2; 25.
