European cycling championships to hold mixed relay race

The European cycling championships in August will feature a mixed-gender relay for the first time, the European Cycling Union (UEC) announced on Monday.

The event in Alkmaar in the Netherlands will see the format used ahead of its introduction to the world championships in September.

The race will involve teams of three men and three women, similar to a race already used in mountain bike competitions.

Last year, the International Cycling Union (UCI) said the mixed event would be added to the Road World Championships in Yorkshire.

"This is an important step towards the major objectives for the UCI – the development of women's cycling and the promotion of national federations," UCI president David Lappartient said at the time.

Swimming has also featured a mixed relay at world championships since 2015, while a mixed 4x400m relay will be run in athletics at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
