O’Connor fastest for DiData at Giro

Ben King and Ryan Gibbons and Ryan Gibbons both put in strong rides for Team Dimension Data, finishing with times of 42:31 and 42:43 on stage 16 at the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday.

It was the young Australian O’Connor who was the best-placed rider finishing for Team Dimension Data with a time of 41:58. He took 25th on the stage and thus maintained his position of 12th in the GC.

The long individual time trial set for stage 16 was won by Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing). Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) was second, followed by defending champion Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb).

Stage 16 was a 34,2km individual time trial running from Trento to Rovereto. The course was relatively flat, favouring the specialists.

Dennis (BMC Racing) set a time of 40:40, and even though Simon Yates finished 22nd on the stage, his ride ensured that he will start tomorrow in the Maglia Rosa.

“Today was run very well. I saw the course earlier on today in the rain and the preparation was spot on. I felt good, I had a really good sleep on the rest day so I was really controlled. During the stage, I knew what I could try," said O’Connor.

"Once we got to the rolling parts of the course it was really about trying to ramp up. I was able to cross the finish line not completely blown, and I was really content with what I was able to do on course.

"In comparison to the GC men around me, that was really about what my day was for, the guys five spots below and the guys five spots above. I was able to be ahead of almost all of them, and I am pretty chuffed with today. It was a good day,” he concluded.
