Stats attack: Sundowns v Arrows

Golden Arrows will try to halt Mamelodi Sundowns’ seemingly unrelenting march to the Absa Premiership title when the teams meet at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday. Kick-off is at 7:30pm CAT.


• Mamelodi Sundowns beat Golden Arrows 1-0 at the Magogo Stadium in December as Bangaly Soumahoro scored the game’s only goal in the sixth minute. Sundowns had 52.6 percent possession in the match, outshooting Golden Arrows 15-11. Arrows managed just one shot on target all match.

• Mamelodi Sundowns have won their last three PSL matches against Golden Arrows, keeping a clean sheet in all three matches. The previous league meeting was a goalless draw, as Arrows haven’t scored in 380 minutes of PSL football against Sundowns dating back to Ryan Chapman’s winning goal in September 2015.

• Golden Arrows did beat Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017, winning 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 at Lucas Moripe Stadium after a Nduduzo Sibiya goal in the 67th minute.

• Golden Arrows have failed to win in their last seven league visits to Sundowns, losing four times and drawing three since a 4-2 victory in October 2008.

• Golden Arrows have scored just one goal in their last five PSL matches away at Mamelodi Sundowns, a goal from Thamsanqa Gabuza in a 1-1 draw in February 2013. Arrows have failed to score in their last three trips to Sundowns in the league.


• Mamelodi Sundowns have won their last four PSL matches, equalling their longest winning streak of the season. Sundowns last won more than four straight PSL matches in April 2017 when they won five games in a row.

• Mamelodi Sundowns are unbeaten in their last nine PSL matches (6W, 3D), their longest unbeaten run of the season, and their longest unbeaten run in the PSL since going 18 straight games without defeat from September 2015 to March 2016.

• Masandawana are unbeaten in their last 14 games in all competitions, winning their last six matches with two goals scored in each of those wins.

• Mamelodi Sundowns have conceded just four goals during their nine-match unbeaten run, keeping five clean sheets over this period. They haven’t allowed more than one goal in a PSL match since their last loss, a 3-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in January.

• Mamelodi Sundowns are unbeaten in their last five home PSL matches. They had lost five of their first eight games at home this season (3W).

• Mamelodi Sundowns have won their last two home PSL matches, both 2-0 victories. It’s only their second home winning streak of the season after a run of three consecutive wins in December.


• Golden Arrows have won only three of their last 21 PSL matches after a three-match winning streak in September. Arrows have lost seven times and drawn 11 games during this period.

• Golden Arrows have avoided defeat in four of their last five PSL matches, winning twice and drawing twice, as their lone defeat came at the hands of Orlando Pirates.

• Golden Arrows’ last six defeats have all been by a single goal, including the last four by 2-1 scorelines. Arrows’ only loss by more than one goal this season was a 3-0 defeat at SuperSport United in October.

• Golden Arrows ended a nine-match away winless run when they beat Cape Town City in their last away PSL match in early April. Arrows had drawn five and lost four of their nine away PSL matches prior to their win over Cape Town City.

• Golden Arrows are aiming to win consecutive away PSL matches for the second time this season. They beat Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars away from home in September.


• Masandawana have won the possession battle in their last six league matches, outshooting opponents 92-57 in that period.

• Khama Billiat has scored with 24.1 percent of his shots in the PSL this season, the best conversion rate in the competition (seven goals).

• Denis Onyango has kept 11 clean sheets in the PSL this season, the joint second-highest total in the competition. Only Itumeleng Khune (15) has kept more.

• Mamelodi Sundowns lead the league in goals scored (43 - 1.65 per match), conversion percentage (12.2 percent) and shot accuracy (36 percent).

• Mamelodi Sundowns are currently in second place in the PSL behind Orlando Pirates in average possession (56.2 to 55.7 percent), passes per match (526 to 516.8), passing accuracy (84.2 to 82.8 percent) and final third passes per match (104 to 93.1).


• Golden Arrows have the lowest percentage of passes in final third (14.9 percent), final third passes per match (56.5) and final third passing accuracy (69.0 percent) in the PSL this season.

• Abafana Bes'thende have conceded 13 first-half goals this season, only Baroka FC (18) have conceded more in the PSL. Arrows have scored 21 second-half goals, the same total as Mamelodi Sundowns, the joint second-highest total in the PSL.

• Golden Arrows have led 1-0 on 10 occasions in the PSL this season, losing only one of those games (6W, 3D), a 2-1 defeat to Amazulu in February.

• Clinton Larsen’s team have trailed 1-0 on 12 occasions in the PSL this season, failing to win a single game (6L, 6D).

• Arrows started this season with 11 points from their first five games (2.20 points per game), but have averaged less than a point per game since then (20 points in 21 games - 0.95 per match). Last season, they took 13 points from their first six games (2.17 per game) but just 25 points from their next 24 games (1.04 points per game).
