Barca game is for experience - Pitso

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says the Absa Premiership champions have little chance when they host Barcelona on Wednesday (live on SuperSport at 6pm) but he does hope the experience of playing against the Spanish giants leaves a positive impact on his players

“The Barca game is for the guys to get experience, to see how far we are and what the difference is between us and Barca. It is about seeing how our tactics are in relation to Barca,” he ahead of the friendly match at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

“But winning is another story.”

Barcelona are being brought out to South Africa, for a second time in the last 10 years, to play Sundowns by the club’s billionaire owner Patrice Motsepe, who is a rabid fan of the Catalan club.

He is paying 3-million Euros for Barcelona to fly in and out to play the match, according to a report in the Barcelona daily El Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning, will play the game at 6pm local time and then fly straight back to Spain, where they finish their La Liga campaign with a Sunday game against Real Sociedad.

But even with the potentially exhausting schedule for the visitors, Mosimane does not think his team can win.

“Of course we aren’t going to stop Barca from playing. They score a goal every 13-14 minutes. So then you can’t have stress.

“You are happy to play them. You say let’s see how long we can last before the first goal comes.

“It’s not about beating Barca. It’s just to see our organisation, the way we defend and attack. We want to see how far we are in that regard because we play our own way.”

Sundowns finished the domestic season last Saturday with their third title in five season and managed to persuade the Confederation of African Football to move Tuesday’s Champions League game at Horoya of Guinea to next week, May 22.

“This match is not about who will win,” Mosimane added. “I think we know who'll win. We expect Barca to win, not to say we aren’t confident but the reality has to be there. If we win, it’s unbelievable.”

“I must be honest with you, I am so excited about the game.”
