Wits and Celtic top after back-to-back wins

Midweek action in the Absa Premiership saw Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic sharing top spot on the log with six points, while the pressure is already mounting on new Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas.

The Italian saw his side succumb 3-1 at home to the Clever Boys in Tuesday’s big match, with Deon Hotto, Terrence Dzvukumanja and Gift Motupa netting for the visitors to see them consolidate pole position.

Mamelodi Sundowns also clicked into winning form on Tuesday, as they defeated hosts Polokwane City 2-0 thanks to goals from Ricardo Nascimento and Lebohang Maboe.

Wednesday saw Celtic join Wits on a full haul of points, as their strong start under new coach Steve Komphela continued with a 2-0 win away to Golden Arrows.

Orlando Pirates also won on the road, as they beat Chippa United 1-0 thanks to an own goal from Gerald Modisane. The Buccaneers ended the game with 10 men after the sending off of defender Mthokozisi Dube.

Maritzburg United also had a man sent off away from home, but they succumbed 2-1 against Free State Stars to suffer a second straight loss at the start of the campaign, while Baroka FC took advantage of Cape Town City’s naive defending to win 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, and SuperSport United edged AmaZulu 1-0 in Tshwane.

The second round of Absa Premiership matches will wrap up with a clash between Highlands Park and Black Leopards at Makhulong Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
