Chiefs look to build momentum

Kaizer Chiefs will look to build momentum in the Absa Premiership when they host Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 6pm CAT (SA, GMT+2).

Chiefs broke a two-game losing streak by edging Black Leopards 1-0 at home on November 7. The Soweto side triumphed thanks to a lone goal from Willard Katsande and some excellent goalkeeping from Itumeleng Khune.

The Amakhosi have claimed just seven points from five home matches this season and will be looking to improve on that record under coach Giovanni Solinas.

Chippa suffered a second successive defeat when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Mamelodi Sundowns on October 27. The Eastern Cape side will look for a return to their September-October form when they took seven points from nine available.

The Chilli Boys have yet to win away from home this season, with just one point from their four matches on the road. Their last away result was a 2-1 loss at Highlands Park in early October.

In head-to-head stats, Chippa and Chiefs have met in 10 league matches since 2012/13. The Amakhosi have claimed five wins compared to four for the Chilli Boys, while one match has been drawn.

The Soweto giants have won three of their five home league matches against the Eastern Cape side, suffering two defeats in the process.

Chippa completed a league ‘double’ over Chiefs for the first time last season, winning 1-0 at home in the first half of the campaign and 3-0 away in the return game in Soweto.

In fact, the Chilli Boys have won four of the last five league clashes between these two clubs.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas

“We created a lot of chances. When you’re leading 1-0 [and] you have a chance to kill the game [you should score]. We need more determination in the box. When you’re in the box we need to convert the chances,” the Italian said after the narrow win over Black Leopards.

“Today we had a lot of chances but we scored only one goal. So we need to score more. I’m happy [with the clean sheet] because the team showed character. So solid. This is good but we need to score more goals. When we have the opportunity we need to score.”

Chippa United coach Eric Tinkler

“I thought there was a penalty in the first half personally but that’s how the dice rolls. I can’t complain because I know I’ll land in trouble. It’s the same week in and week out. I can’t fault the boys for effort,” said Tinkler after the loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last month.

“It’s one of those games where we deserved to get something but we don’t. We can’t be saying this every week. That’s the frustration for me and for them. I feel for them. They worked their socks off tonight and they deserved more than what they got.”

Willard Katsande – Not renowned for his goal-scoring, Katsande nonetheless popped up with the decisive moment of Kaizer Chiefs’ win over Black Leopards on November 7. The Zimbabwean will hope for another influential showing as his team chases back-to-back victories.

Itumeleng Khune – An excellent performance in goal helped the Amakhosi secure all three points from their clash against Black Leopards in midweek, and Khune will hope to carry that form into this match against Chippa on Saturday evening.

Daniel Akpeyi – The Nigerian goalkeeper – who has been drafted into the Super Eagles squad for their clash against South Africa next weekend – will hope to keep a clean sheet against the Amakhosi’s attackers.

Thamsanqa Sangweni – The 29-year-old midfielder put in a strong showing against Mamelodi Sundowns in Chippa’s last league match and will be looking to further underline his class by dominating the engine room against Kaizer Chiefs.
