City set sights on second successive win

Cape Town City will be aiming to record a second successive win in the Absa Premiership when they lock horns with Black Leopards at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Kick-off is at 3:30pm CAT.

City claimed their first league victory since the opening round of the season back in August when they defeated AmaZulu 3-0 in the Mother City late last month – Taariq Fielies, Siphelele Mthembu and Thabo Nodada were on target for the hosts.

The Citizens have claimed seven points from five home matches this season. They have beaten Usuthu and SuperSport United, drawn with Golden Arrows, and suffered defeats to Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits.

Leopards have picked up just one point from their last nine available after they were beaten 1-0 at Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium in midweek. The Limpopo team last picked up a win by beating local rivals Baroka FC in early October.

Lidoda Duvha have yet to win away from home this season, recording two draws and three defeats from their five matches on the road.

In head-to-head terms, this will be the first-ever top-flight league meeting of Cape Town City and Black Leopards.

Head-to-Head Statistics

N/A – This will be the first top-flight league meeting of Cape Town City and Black Leopards.

What They Said:

Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy:

“It’s a newly promoted team and they certainly haven’t disappointed themselves this season,” said McCarthy.

“They are a hardworking team and pretty sound technically. They can cause a lot of problems if we are not organised or compact.

“We had a fantastic game against AmaZulu because everything went according to plan. We played what we see every day here in training and then we eventually managed to score more than one goal in a game.

‘We’ve been brilliant and now we want to continue that mindset that we had against AmaZulu, and take it to Black Leopards.”

Black Leopards head coach Joel Masutha:

“The only thing that we need was to convert chances”, Masutha said.”The ball just doesn’t want to go in. We’ll still work on it. I believe we’ll get it right.

“We’ve been playing like this throughout. It’s only this game and the last two against SuperSport United and Golden Arrows that we didn’t play well. I understand that we lost because we didn’t perform but the other games we’re losing doing the same things.

“Sometimes it’s tiring to come out and say ‘we played well but we didn’t score’. The hunger is there but we need to work more on attack and finish the chances in the box."

Key Players:

Cape Town City

Roland Putsche: The Austrian midfielder is one of the most underrated players in the league. His good form has been synonymous to the Citizens success in their first few seasons of existence with his quality both in defence and attack are rare commodity. Watch out for his fierce strike from range!

Ayanda Patosi: The attacker has this season threatened to return to the sort of form that took him to stardom in Lokeren. On his day, Patosi is unplayable and his quality from set-pieces is valuable asset. Benni will be hoping to see even more from Patosi who should really be threatening for a place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Black Leopards

Phathutshedzo Nange: The hard-working midfielder will have his hands full in the Mother City with Putsche , Thabo Nodada and Teko Modise presenting a notable threat. Masutha will be counting on experienced heads like Nange if they are to curb their poor away form.

Marks Munyai: The Black Leopards skipper will be hoping to lead his troops to what will be a welcome victory on their travels. With tricky wingers to contend with, Munyai is expected to have his hands full as Leopards go in search of all three points.
