Sundowns and SuperSport renew rivalry

Mamelodi Sundowns will square off with their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 3:30pm CAT (SA, GMT+2)

Matsatsantsa extended their unbeaten run to six games in the league when they drew 0-0 with Bloemfontein Celtic away in midweek.

The draw took SuperSport to fourth place on the league standings, having accumulated 19 points from 11 games. They are two points behind second-placed Bidvest Wits.

Meanwhile, Sundowns are currently enjoying a 23-match unbeaten run in the league, having drawn 0-0 with Orlando Pirates at home earlier this month.

As a result, the defending champions are placed fifth on the league table, having collected 18 points from 10 matches. They are three points behind Wits.

The Brazilians secured a 2-0 win over Equatorial Guinea's Leones Vegetarianos away in the 2018 Caf Champions League preliminary round first-leg match in midweek.

WHAT THE TEAM ARE SAYING

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo

“It’s going to be a difficult game because in our past nine meetings we have not beaten Sundowns," he said.

"I think the best result we’ve had was last season when we drew 1-1, so we know that it’s not going to be an easy game, like any derby."

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Jeremy Brockie

"I do have a knack of scoring against my former clubs. Now that I have found the net a couple of times it's one less thing to stress about," he said.

"I have a good feeling going into this SuperSport game. It's important that we get results in these league games because there is not much time and the games are coming thick and fast."

UNITED KEY PLAYERS

Bongani Khumalo: The experienced defender has been solid at the heart of the Matsatsantsa defence which has kept two successive clean sheets. Khumalo will be looking to marshal the SuperSport defence and ensure that they do not concede.

Evans Rusike: The Zimbabwean striker remains Matsatsantsa's first-choice striker having scored five goals in all competitions this season. Rusike will be keen to add to his tally and help his side secure a win over Sundowns.

SUNDOWNS KEY PLAYERS

Gaston Sirino: The Venezuelan attacking midfielder is an influential player in the Sundowns squad, having netted three times in the league this season. Sirino has the ability to inspire the Brazilians to victory against SuperSport.

Jeremy Brockie: The lethal striker has regained his confidence having netted against Leones Vegetarianos in the Caf Champions League match in midweek. Brockie will be eager to haunt his former side, SuperSport, by inspiring Sundowns to victory.
