Pirates remain top, Sundowns win derby

Orlando Pirates continue to lead the 2018/19 Absa Premiership log despite failing to defeat Maritzburg United on a weekend of action which also saw AmaZulu move away from the foot of the table and Mamelodi Sundowns claim Tshwane derby honours.

The round opened on Friday night with AmaZulu moving right out of the relegation zone thanks to their second successive win – this time they edged Chippa United 1-0 away from home, with Butholezwe Ncube getting the goal.

Saturday afternoon saw Highlands Park get a much-needed win and end Cape Town City’s strong recent form with a 2-0 triumph at Makhulong Stadium (goals from Peter Shalulile and Tendai Ndoro), followed by Golden Arrows defeating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium thanks to a pair of first-half penalties from defender Limbikani Mzava.

Saturday’s night games featured a 1-0 win for Bidvest Wits over Black Leopards at Thohoyandou Stadium after Frank Mhango netted late on, while Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United played out a goalless stalemate at Orlando Stadium.

The result kept the Buccaneers at the top of the table, though they could have been usurped by Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday. Instead, Steve Komphela’s side were beaten 2-1 at home by Polokwane City and find themselves in fourth.

The Tshwane derby saw Sundowns extend their unbeaten run this season with a 2-1 away win over SuperSport United, with goals from Lebohang Maboe and Lyle Lakay. The result also sees them move to third spot on the log, just three points behind Bucs and with three games in hand.

The Absa Premiership will resume with a full round of fixtures on the midweek of December 11-12.
