Sundowns held to goalless draw in Abidjan

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 stalemate by ASEC Mimosas in a Caf Champions League Group A clash at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan on Tuesday.

The game failed to conjure any real goal-scoring opportunities throughout the 90 with both teams struggling to adjust to unfavourable playing conditions.

Nonetheless, Brazilians head coach Pitso Mosimane will see the result as a point gained more than anything else, as they move up to seven points in the group - a point above second-placed Wydad Casablanca who play host to Lobi Stars later this evening.

The first shot in anger and only chance of any real substance in the first half fell to Thapelo Morena in the 24th minute with the attacker's snap-shot flying inches wide of Abdoul Cisse's goal.

The tempo increased following the interval, but the quality - or rather lack thereof - remained with both teams struggling to get to grips with the bumpy surface.

Sundowns, though, should've hit the front in the 58th minute following a swift counter-attack. Lebohang Maboe and Emiliano Tade teamed up well before the latter teed up Themba Zwane, but the in-form forward could only succeed in guiding his resulting shot over the crossbar.

The hosts finally registered an attempt on target in the 65th minute of the clash as Patrick Malo picked out Ahmed Toure inside the area. The Burkina Faso national's tame header, though, was straight at Denis Onyango who made an easy save.

In the end, the two teams could only register two shots on target between them as they now shift focus to match day five. ASEC next host Wydad in Abidjan while Sundowns play host to Lobi Stars next month.
