Sundowns face confident Bees in Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns will square off with EC Bees in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday.

Kick-off is at 7:30pm.

The Brazilians booked their place in the Last 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over National First Division (NFD) outfit Cape Town All Stars at the Athlone Stadium in the Mother City last month.

The four-time Nedbank Cup champions' last competitive game was against Rwandan club Rayon Sports in a Caf Champions League match, which ended in a goalless draw in Kigali last week.

Meanwhile, EC Bees eased into the Last 16 after defeating Limpopo SAB regional league side Mariveni United 3-1 at the Pietersburg Stadium (the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium) in Polokwane last month.

The Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe side is making its third appearance in the lucrative competition. They were knocked out by Orlando Pirates and Magesi FC in the last two editions.

Head-to-Head

N/A - This will be the first competitive meeting of Mamelodi Sundowns and EC Bees.

What are the teams saying

Sundowns midfielder Aubrey Ngoma

“For them (Bees) they are motivated already because they are playing against the team they’re watching every day on TV," he said.

“It’s always difficult to go on the field and you don’t know the type of players you’re up against.

"So we have to approach this game like we are playing any other PSL team. I think if we can get the mentality right and match them with an effort and commitment‚ we’ve got enough talent in the team to go through to the next round.”

EC Bees defender George Gawe

“No that does not scare me. They beat Mariveni United 2-0 last season and we beat Mariveni 3-1," he said.

"I don’t think they will get 24-0. Maybe it will be 1-0 or 2-0, but that does not mean it will be for them. Maybe that 2-0 will be ours. They have to prepare as much as we will prepare for them.

“It’s a big game, but we have to go to Pretoria and enjoy ourselves. It motivates us because last season we played (Orlando) Pirates. We are going to enjoy. If there’s an upset, then there’s an upset.”

Mamelodi Sundowns key players

Razak Brimah: The Ghana international shot-stopper kept a clean sheet against Cape Town All Stars in the Last 16 match and he could start against Bees with Sundowns' first-choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango being rested.

Sibusiso Vilakazi: The South Africa international forward is in good form at the moment having scored twice against AmaZulu in an Absa Premiership match and he will be eager to inspire Sundowns to victory over Bees.

EC Bees key players

Athini Bisha: The former Mthatha defender player is a key player in the team and he will be looking to marshall the Bees defence, and ensure that they do not concede against Sundowns.

Sipho Mtule: The former Chippa United attacker was the hero for Bees in the Last 16 against Mariveni United as he scored twice and he will be hoping to replicate the same form against Sundowns, and help his side cause a major upset.
