Blitzboks scrape into quarters

The Springbok Sevens team made heavy weather of their quarterfinal against surprise package Spain, but kept their hopes of retaining their World Series title alive with a narrow 15-10 win at the Paris Sevens on Sunday.

The Blitzboks needed a try by Justin Geduld in extra time, after Spain scored on the final hooter to make sure the game was a 10-all draw in order to progress.

And with Fiji losing to England in an epic quarterfinal, the Blitzboks have the opportunity to overtake them if they win the tournament.

Fiji can only finish fifth if they win their remaining games, and if the Blitzboks win the tournament they will pass them on the overall log and retain the title they won last season.

But they will have to play a lot better than they did in the quarterfinal, as their old rivals New Zealand wait in the semifinals and will be a massive challenge for Neil Powell’s side. The game kicks off at 2.25pm (CAT, GMT+2)

Dewald Human opened the scoring and Dylan Sage scored the other try.

England will face Canada in the other semifinal.
